This leather spent forty days in vegetable tannins before a single cut was made. Then the finished boot was lowered whole into a black dye bath - and the hide absorbed that darkness unevenly, by design.

Ruggero Guidi's family has been tanning in Pescia, Tuscany since 1896 - five generations working in the same stone buildings with the same chestnut bark and plant-gall extracts documented in the town's leather guild records since the fourteenth century. The horse leather on the PL1 begins as a dense, muscular hide selected for grain tightness, then rotates through wooden drums in the Conceria Guidi Rosellini tannery for over a month. What emerges carries warmth in its structure - a faint scent of bark and resin that fades slowly over the first weeks of wear, and a surface that absorbs light completely rather than reflecting it. In every room, these boots occupy shadow.

The object-dyeing step happens after full construction. The assembled boot enters the dye bath as a complete object - sole, upper, seams, interior - which means every inch of the hide saturates at once, and the final color is never entirely uniform. At the toe box, heel, and stress lines, warm olive-brown bleeds through the matte charcoal in patches that are unique to this pair and no other. The turned-up toe gives the silhouette a sculptural forward lean. A single EXCELLA front zip runs the full length of the vamp - its close-set metal teeth cold under the fingertip on first touch, warming within seconds. The stacked leather heel is built in hand-shaped layers, and Goodyear welt stitching runs unbroken around the sole perimeter - construction meant to be seen and to last.

On first wear, the horse leather resists. Within two weeks, it has read the exact architecture of your foot and begun to yield to it. Within two months, it fits no other wearer. This is not a selling point Guidi invented - it is the physics of vegetable-tanned hide. The boot you buy and the boot you own in a year are two different objects. Both are intentional.

Details

  • Material: 100% Full Grain Horse Leather, vegetable-tanned at Conceria Guidi Rosellini, Pescia, Tuscany over 40+ days
  • Dyeing: Object-dyed post-construction - fully assembled boot dipped whole, creating seamless color saturation with natural tonal variation at stress points
  • Construction: Goodyear welt, stacked leather sole built in hand-shaped layers
  • Closure: EXCELLA front zip, full vamp length
  • Silhouette: Sculptural turned-up toe box, single sole profile
  • Model designation: PL1 (Single Sole Front Zip)
  • Origin: 100% Handmade in Italy
  • Break-in: Horse leather is rigid when new and molds to the foot over 2-4 weeks of regular wear. Wear thick socks to accelerate the process. Size up if wide-footed - the Italian last runs narrow.
  • Care: Condition with neutral leather cream every 3-4 months. Avoid water saturation. Color variation and creasing at flex points are properties of vegetable-tanned leather, not defects.

In a year, the olive-brown will have spread further into the black - mapping every crease, every mile, every decision you made while wearing them.
