GD01 Envelope Shoulder Bag in Wine

The weight of a century in your hand -- groppone leather, cut from the densest section of the hide, shaped into an object that carries more history than belongings.

Since 1896, the Guidi family has operated Conceria Guidi Rosellini in Pescia, Tuscany -- one of the last ancestral tanneries still defining what leather can become. The GD01 is built from groppone, the thick butt section of the cowhide where the grain is tightest and the fiber structure most resilient. This is not decorative leather. It is structural. Each piece arrives at the workshop already carrying the tension of the animal's movement, already dense with the memory of use.

The envelope construction folds the leather into angular planes that converge at a horn-shaped toggle, secured by hand-forged chain links. Open the flap and the raw flesh side of the groppone is exposed -- a napped, tactile surface in a lighter register of the wine tone, proof that nothing here is lined or concealed. What you touch inside is the same hide you see outside, just the other face of it. The long crossbody strap is cut thin enough to disappear against dark clothing, while a decorative chain with pendant charms hangs from the hardware -- Guidi's signature gesture of controlled ornamentation.

The wine color is achieved through Guidi's object-dyeing process: the bag is fully assembled first, then submerged and dyed as a complete form. The pigment saturates every fold, every raw edge, every stitch at once. No two pieces absorb identically. The result is a depth of color that shifts between dark plum and aged burgundy depending on the light, with each crease developing its own tonal character over time.
